The first 392 play-by-ear exercises begin with short phrases built from small groups of tones. Modal contexts change from section to section; the phrases lengthen and the relationships between tones become more complex.

Core Levels 1–7 begin with small groups of tones and develop longer melodic phrases in changing modal contexts. The notation edition uses standard music notation. The guitar tab edition presents the same course in tablature, transposed one octave lower for guitar.
Each exercise presents a fragment of melody. Listen before reading, hold the phrase in memory, then sing or play it back. The book is designed for a teacher to present the exercises, but an independent learner can record them in advance and practise from the recordings.
The standard notation and guitar tablature editions contain the same exercises. Choose the notation you read. All four ebooks in the series are available now.
