A Tonal Path

A Tonal Path, Volume 1 contains the Core Levels 1–7. Its exercises develop the ability to retain, navigate, and reproduce melodic structures from memory.

Each exercise is first heard and reproduced from memory. The notation may then be consulted for study and correction. The books are issued in notation and guitar-tab editions.

Method

The method

Retain

Hear the melodic structure and hold it in memory without recourse to notation.

Navigate

Establish the relations between its tones and follow its course internally.

Reproduce

Sing or play the structure from memory, returning to the beginning when necessary.

Course of study

The exercises and their order

The course begins with short phrases formed from small groups of tones. The phrases lengthen, and their tonal relations become more complex, as the student proceeds.
