TonalPath

Exercises in hearing and playing from memory.

Listen to a short melody, hold it in memory, and play it back. The course moves through modal and chromatic contexts, with increasingly complex melodic structures.

The method

  1. Hear. Listen to the melodic structure without looking at notation.
  2. Know. Hold it in memory and attend to how its tones relate to one another.
  3. Play. Sing or play it back from memory. Listen again as needed.

The exercises use fragments of melody in changing modal contexts. Later levels introduce chromatic material.

The books

A Tonal Path presents the exercises in standard notation and guitar tablature. Volume 1 covers Levels 1–7; Volume 2 covers Levels 8–12.

A teacher can play the exercises. For independent study, record them in advance and work from the recordings.

Availability
